Hiller to step down as Chairman of Socialist Party
István Hiller, who led the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSzP) to its second consecutive election victory on April 23, said today he won't seek a new term after municipal elections are held in the third quarter.
Hiller, 42, who was named as Hungary's next Education and Culture Minister today, said he won't run for the position of chairman at his party's next assembly so that he can focus instead on running the ministry. The party congress will probably be held after Hungary's municipal elections, he said.
“I will continue taking part in the party's management, but I won't run for the position of chairman,” Hiller said at a news conference at the party's Budapest headquarters today.
The daily tasks as party leader will be taken over by Ferenc Juhász, his current deputy and former defense minister, until a new chairman is voted in, said Hiller, who has been chairman since October 2004.
