Gov't parties to choose Demszky as joint Budapest mayoral candidate

Parliament

Government officials requesting anonymity told MTI (Hungarian News Agency) on Thursday that the main governing MSzP (Hungarian Socialist Party) and the junior governing SzDSz (The Alliance of Free democrats) intended to jointly support long-time Budapest mayor Gábor Demszky (SzDSz) for re-election this autumn although they would do so on separate candidate lists. Both parties would list MSzP's Gyula Molnár as the second candidate on their lists, said the sources. Despite the separate lists, the two parties will offer a joint programme, and run a joint campaign, the sources said, adding that the two parties, Demszky, and Molnár would be signing an agreement to this effect prior to a cabinet meeting at Balatonöszöd, SW Hungary, on Friday. Demszky has been Budapest mayor for the past 16 years and Molnár has been mayor of Budapest's District Eleven since 2002. (Bloomberg)
