Budapest sets deadline for Metro 3 renovation, but funding still unclear
The City of Budapest anticipates that the renovation of its number 3 Metro line will be completed in 2019, even though the source of funding for the project has not yet been confirmed, Mayor István Tarlós said on Friday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
The European Union still has not approved the project for funding, Tarlós revealed. If EU monies fail to materialize, “the state will be forced to dig into its pockets”, he said.
The plan for the renovation has been finalized and the deadline for completion has been set for September 30, 2019, Tarlós said.
Pushing back the deadline any further would be a “catastrophic failure” for the government, the state and the capital, he added, warning that it could mean the line is shut down in 2019.
The renovation is set to start in November and December of this year, after an infrastructure for replacement buses is established, he said. If the start of the project is delayed by even a month, the deadline will be put at risk, he added.
