8,142 mayoral candidates fielded for election

Local election offices registered 8,142 candidates for mayor running in the upcoming municipal elections by the Friday midnight deadline, nol.hu reported.

 According to information from the National Election Office, 79% of the candidates are running as
independent.

As for local council members, a total 35,907 candidates have been registered for Hungary’s 3,177 towns and cities.

The registration of 18 nominees in three villages is still pending, while in two villages there will be no election in lack of nominees, the report said.
