Gov't Extends Childbirth Pledge Deadline for Some Baby Loan Borrowers

Government

The government will extend the deadline for having children for Hungarians who took out prenatal baby support loans around the time of the pandemic, government spokeswoman Eszter Vitályos said at a government press briefing on Monday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

The five-year deadline for the childbirth pledge will be extended by a uniform two years, until July 1, 2026, for all borrowers who took out the credit between the time it was rolled out in 2019 and 2021, Ms Vitályos said. The deadline extension could impact "a couple hundred" borrowers by July but "several thousand" by year-end, she added.

It was in the summer of 2019 when the government introduced the unsecured, interest-free, general-purpose prenatal baby support loans for families who pledged to have children.

Stock of the loans reached HUF 2.115 tln at the end of May, the latest available data show.
