Gov't Aims to Boost Uni Enrollment in STEM Subjects to 50%

Government

Hungary's government aims to increase university enrollment in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs to 50% by 2023, Culture and Innovation Ministry state secretary Balázs Hankó said at the Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems Expo in the capital on Tuesday.

Hankó noted that R&D spending in Hungary came to a record HUF 907 billion in 2021, equivalent to 1.68% of GDP. Government spending accounted for HUF 318 bln of that amount, he added.

The number of people working in R&D in Hungary has risen 97% since 2010, a faster rate than anywhere else in the European Union, he said.

The Institute for Computer Science and Control, which organized the two-day expo, expects 400 invitees to attend, one-fifth from abroad.
