Former U.S. President Donald J. Trump released a statement on his website endorsing incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

"Viktor Orbán of Hungary truly loves his Country and wants safety for his people. He has done a powerful and wonderful job in protecting Hungary, stopping illegal immigration, creating jobs, trade, and should be allowed to continue to do so in the upcoming Election. He is a strong leader and respected by all. He has my Complete support and Endorsement for reelection as Prime Minister!" the statement reads.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó acknowledged the endorsement in Facebook post late Monday.

"Thank you, Mr. President!" the foreign minister said.

Trump granted Orbán an Oval Office meeting in 2019, which marked the Hungarian PM's first visit to the White House since 2001, when he met Vice President Dick Cheney. Orbán also met Bill Clinton in the Oval Office back in 1998.

According to CNN, Trump said that Orbán is "a tough man but he's a respected man," at a photo-op during the 2019 meeting. "Probably, like me, a little bit controversial, but that's OK. That's OK," he added.
