Parliament OKs referendum against EU refugee quotas
Hungarian Parliament yesterday approved the governmentʼs call for a referendum against mandatory migrant quotas for European Union countries, according to reports. The referendum would let the Hungarian public voice opposition to the European Commission plan to require all member states to take a certain number of refugees.
Hungary’s government has said it is opposed the so-called “quota plan”, which is why it is pushing for this referendum. The referendum question translates as: “Do you want the European Union to prescribe the settlement of non-Hungarian citizens into Hungary without the approval of the Hungarian Parliament?”
Appeals against Parliament’s decision can be submitted to the Constitutional Court within 15 days, and the court has 30 days to make a ruling. Opposition parties have said the oppose the plan.
The plan to call a referendum was approved by the Hungarian Parliament with 136 votes in favor, including members of the governing parties and the opposition far right Jobbik. Five independent lawmakers voted against the measure. Lawmakers also approved an allocation capped at HUF 4.9 bln for the national ballot.
