Gergely Karácsony, the incumbent in Sunday's race for Mayor of Budapest, called for an election repeat on Thursday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Speaking a day after a recount of invalid votes in the contest was initiated by Dávid Vitézy, the runner-up, Karácsony said the recount presented too many legal uncertainties and proposed a repeat of the election as "the only remedy".

He added that the withdrawal from the race of Alexandra Szentkirályi, the Fidesz-KDNP candidate, at the last minute, was part of a "strategy to mislead voters".

Karacsony took 47.53% of the vote in the race on Sunday. while Vitézy garnered 47.49%, corresponding to a difference of a little more than 300 votes.
