More than 42% of eligible voters cast their ballots in the 2024 EP/Municipal election in Hungary, according to data from the National Election Office (NVI).

This is well above the average turnout for an EP or municipal election in Hungary, but turnout has not fallen somewhat behind the level observed during the 2022 General Election (52.75% at 3 p.m.)

The national average turnout (42.04%) was slightly below the voter turnout in the capital (43.63%), where the incumbent Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony (DK-MSZP-P) is challenged by LMP-backed Dávid Vitézy.

As the BBJ reported earlier, the mayoral battle in Budapest has become competitive after the resignation of Fidesz candidate Alexandra Szentkirályi. Since Szentkirályi resigned, several Fidesz politicians expressed their support for Vitézy, prompting Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony to call his opponent a "Trojan Horse" candidate of Viktor Orbán.

The two most recent polls show a tight race between Karácsony and Vitézy. According to a poll by Publicus, Karácsony (backed by 50% of Budapest voters) leads his opponent by three points, while another poll by Nézőpont shows Vitézy (52%) ahead of Karácsony (45%) by seven points. However, while the latter poll was conducted after Szentkirályi dropped out, Publicus sampled voters when the Fidesz candidate's resignation from the race was still hypothetical, the polling institute's head told Hungarian news site Népszava.
