British universities warn the society to stop ignoring the importance of sleep. Shortening of sleeping can cause serious illnesses like cancer, heart problems and also type 2 diabetes, and inevitably leads to worse performance at work. Sleeping inappropriately has become a worldwide phenomenon and Hungary seems to follow the trend.

Researchers say that in the modern society people are exposed to being alert in 24/7, thus their biological clock is destroyed. People seem to ignore the fact that lack of natural light conditions the brain to prepare for sleeping. Light pollution and blue light of electronic gadgets prevent the brain from producing melatonin, a hormone essential for sleeping.

Research by Cardo has shown that the situation of Hungarians in terms of sleeping is crucial. Only one fourth of the respondents can sleep for seven to eight hours a day, the ideal sleeping time for us to wake up entirely rested. More than half of Hungarians can only sleep for less than seven hours, though they would be happy to sleep nine to ten hours.

Many Hungarians either fall asleep with leaving the television switched on or they toss and turn for one or two hours before falling asleep. A stunning 87% of Hungarians wake up in the morning feeling tired which is a serious issue as many illnesses might emerge from not sleeping long enough, and tiredness also undermines concentration and has negative effects on working performance.
