Dismissing complaints, prosecutor targets opposition MPs

The office released statements on reports filed in connection with the events at the MTVA HQ on December 16-17, when independent MPs Ákos Hadházy and Bernadett Szél, formerly co-presidents of the opposition party Politics Can Be Different (LMP), were ejected having stayed in the building overnight as part of a group of opposition MPs in a bid to have their demands to the government read out on air.

In addition, during the course of the protest, Democratic Coalition (DK) MP László Varju was wrestled to the ground by security guards and needed hospital treatment.

"The MPs acted in the MTVA HQ as non-official persons, because they did not conduct an official process, but their goal, from the beginning, with their appearance and movement, was to disrupt the programming by interfering with the live programs, reading out political demands related to the protest," the office said.

At the same time, the office claimed that the MPs "due to their disruptive behavior, hindered the actions of the members of the MTVA Armed Security Guard, who acted against them legally, by physically resisting them. The recordings prove that the removal of the MPs from the building happened in a legal fashion."

The decision means that the complaints filed in reports submitted by the MPs will not be considered, while those filed against them will be prosecuted. The office has ordered an investigation due to attempted "disruption of the operation of public works," and suspicion of "other criminal activities."

In response, members of the opposition announced a demonstration from 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening outside the building of the Office of the Prosecutor General on Markó utca, in Budapestʼs District 5.
