Croatia holds first EP elections
Croatians elected European MPs for the first time Sunday but, with full EU membership three months away, low turnout suggested that euro-enthusiasm was already fading in the Balkan country. The State Electoral Commission said 20.7% of 3.7 million eligible voters cast their ballots in the vote for Croatia’s 12 representatives in the 754-seat European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Preliminary results said that the opposition centre-right Croatian Democratic Union surprisingly was the winner with six seats, the ruling leftist Social Democratic Party had five, while the small Labor party had one. The new MEPs will be sworn in office after July 1. Opinion polls show that slightly more than half of the population want Croatia to become the European Union’s 28th member.
