Cabinet split: Lázár leads strategy, Varga handles economy

History

Under the new division of the Hungarian cabinet into two entities, Prime Minister’s Office chief János Lázár will head the strategic cabinet and National Economy Minister Mihály Varga will head the economic cabinet, according to decisions published in the latest issue of the official gazette Magyar Közlöny.

Under the new cabinet split, János Lázár, left, is in charge of strategy, while Mihály Varga, right, oversees economic issues.

The media began speculating that this would be the division of power as soon as Lázár announced on July 7 that the Hungarian government was planning to divide into two distinct cabinets, one for strategic issues and one for economic issues.

According to a political analyst, the reason for the division of powers is to allow Prime Minister Viktor Orbán more freedom to concentrate on campaigning for the next election, expected in early 2018, and to handle other issues that he deems important.

Under the decisions posted in the official gazette yesterday, the strategic cabinet will be responsible for shaping the governmentʼs stand on the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union, reducing bureaucracy and overseeing the upgrade of the the country’s sole nuclear power plant in Paks, as well as other tasks. Lázár had already been put in charge of the Paks upgrade and reducing bureaucracy in the government institutions.

Magyar Közlöny added that the economic cabinet will be responsible for matters such as decisions on state investments, incentives for economic growth and tax reductions.
