Amnesty International Hungary: Hands off NGOs
Human rights advocacy group Amnesty International Hungary (AIH) announced yesterday that it has asked the Hungarian government to “stop targeting” NGOs and civil society groups.
AIH said it called on the government to allow NGOs to “exercise their right to freedom of association and freedom of expression without intimidation.”
The statement was made in response to the ongoing controversy over the Norway Grant Fund, an international organization whose Hungarian office was raided by state investigators in early June, apparently because some of the groups the fund supports are opposed to the Hungarian government. In AIH’s view, the government is trying to “silence” NGOs that carry out important work, the statement said.
“No democratic society can exist without civilian control and this is why we believe it important to stand up for the freedom of civil society,” AI Hungary director Orsolya Jeney said. She added that their organization is in active partnership with many other organizations supported by the Norway Fund.
