Hungary: Debrecen to host EU neutron research
An international board proposed Debrecen as the possible Hungarian location to host European Spallation Source (ESS), the next generation neutron source for Europe, Economy Minister János Kóka announced.
Currently, there are two such research centers worldwide (in Japan and the US), while Spain, Sweden and Hungary applied to host the center in the EU. The €1 billion project would create 5-600 jobs directly, more indirectly, and would „place Hungary on the scientific map of the world”, said Kóka. The ESS-institution makes new methods available to analyze the inner structure of material, applicable in biotechnology, nanotechnology or in pharmaceuticals. Debrecen was elected from six possible Hungarian locations, and won over Székesfehérvár by a minor difference. (Gazdasági Rádió)
