Half a million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by U.S.-based Pfizer and Germany's BioNTech have arrived in Hungary so far, Pfizer's local unit said on Tuesday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Pfizer Gyógyszerkereskedelmi noted that the first shipment of the Comirnaty vaccine - the first COVID-19 vaccine to be approved for use in the European Union - arrived in Hungary on the day after Christmas. Since then, almost 280,000 people have been inoculated with the vaccine, including more than 100,000 who have already had their second jab.

Hungary has a contract for delivery of 6.6 million doses of Comirnaty by the end of 2021.

Pfizer and BioNTech are expanding production and expect to turn out 2 billion doses of Comirnaty by year-end, Pfizer Gyógyszerkereskedelmi said.
