In the run up to the approaching celebrations honoring the dead in Hungary, Budapest’s Kerepesi cemetery, one of the oldests here, becomes a much more frequented place. The black and white photo above dates from the 1890s, and shows the mausoleum of Lajos Batthyány, the first Prime Minister of Hungary who was executed by firing squad in Pest on 6 October 1849, on the same day as the 13 Martyrs of Arad, the Hdefeated Hungarian generals executed by the Austrians. Today, the monument has received a slight facelift, and the surroundings have gotten busier and greener.
