Then and now

Above is a square in District VIII during the 1956 uprising, when the location was known as Népköztársaság tér (People’s Republic Square). In the early 1990s, the name was changed to Republic Square, and since 2005, February 1 has been celebrated in Hungary as the Day of the Republic. Today the square is named after Pope John Paul II (II. János Pál pápa tér), shown at left, and the country is no longer called the Republic of Hungary, but simply Hungary.
