According to a statement from the cityʼs council, some 140 years ago the city of Paris helped to rebuild flood-hit Szeged. Today, in the spirit of European solidarity, Szeged comes to the aid of Paris, the statement said.

Alongside the one–off aid donation, Szeged has also initiated a fundraising campaign through the city’s public foundation. The bank account set up for donations is 12067008-00105206-00100009.

The Association of Hungarian Jewish Communities (Maszihisz) also offered funds for the reconstruction, business news portal mfor.hu reported. The government has not yet offered a donation, although Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó expressed his solidarity in a statement.

The fire started at the cathedral late on Monday evening, and caused catastrophic damage to the 850-year –old Gothic building. Notre-Dame, which was largely built in the 12th and 13th centuries, is a globally recognized symbol of France, visited by about 13 million people a year, hvg.hu noted.
