Storms bring heatwave to abrupt end
Temperatures in Hungary plummeted on Sunday from highs of 39-40 degrees Centigrade to just 20 C, as severe storms rocked Budapest and eastern Hungary. Dozens of houses and public institutions were damaged, according to reports.
According to news portal hvg.hu, 25 houses were damaged in Orosháza in the southeast of the country, as well as the roof of the city hospital. On Monday morning, 2,600 houses had no electricity, due to high-voltage cables taken down by falling trees.
Based on estimates published by the Generali insurance company, total damage caused by storms in Hungary since July 10 amounts to HUF 1 billion.
Generali said hail has been particularly destructive: in 2016, damage caused by hail almost doubled on a year-on-year basis, from 3,700 to 6,500 cases. The cost of hail damage was the highest in the agriculture sector, at HUF 1.3 billion.
