Contaminated eggs, egg product reach Hungary
Hungarian authorities have discovered a small quantity of imported eggs and egg product contaminated with the insecticide fipronil, the National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH) said late yesterday, according to state news wire MTI.
NÉBIH found contamination in four samples of fresh eggs – one from Germany and three from Poland – on Tuesday. The office also learned of the contamination of the Tamago Ei-Omelett-Block semi-finished frozen egg product through the EUʼs Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). Ázsia Gastro Élelmiszer, a restaurant supplier, imports the product from Germany.
Residues of the insecticide found in eggs and egg product were too low to pose a health risk to consumers. Regardless of that, NÉBIH ordered their withdrawal.
Eggs contaminated with the insecticide, which can be dangerous to humans in large enough doses, had been discovered in 15 EU countries and two others outside the EU by Friday last week. The countries include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, Poland, Luxembourg, the U.K., Germany, Italy, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Hong Kong.
The scale of the withdrawal of contaminated eggs from shelves in the European Union was not great enough to affect market prices in Hungary, a NÉBIH official had said Monday.
