Gas prices to remain unchanged for 94% of households under new system
Gas prices will remain unchanged for 94% of Hungarian households under the government's new pricing system for "universal service providers" - energy suppliers that use a price structure and level controlled by the state - to come into force from January, deputy state secretary for energy affairs Attila Holoda said in Saturday's issue of daily Népszabadság.
Holoda said gas prices were expected to rise 18-26% for households that use more than 250% of the average or an annual 3,000 cubic metres.
"We can feel a price pressure from international price rises, however, the government remains firmly committed to keeping utilities costs under control," he added.
If the system proves viable, a similar one could be introduced for electricity prices, he told the paper.
