Top judge rebuffs prime minister’s criticism

Issues

Head judge of the Kuria, the top judicial body, Péter Darák raised his voice against criticism leveled against the legal system by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Monday, questioning the loyalties of the courts. Darák stressed that the courts are independent stemming from their constitutionally defined standing and added that any such public attacks only go to weaken public trust in the institution. Orbán on Monday came down hard on the court that ruled in favor of energy firms against the state in a challenge to the government’s mandatory household energy cost reduction drive. The prime minister said the court became an accomplice to international interests and acted against the Hungarian people.
