European Court: Slot machine restrictions could go against EU rules

Issues

The European Court of Justice today said Hungarian legislation prohibiting the operation of slot machines outside of casinos may be contrary to the European Unionʼs principle of freedom to provide services, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

"National legislation, which authorizes the operation and playing of certain games of chance only in casinos constitutes a restriction on freedom to provide services," the European Court said regarding a matter referred to it by the Budapest Municipal Court.

Ultimately, the dispute must be decided by the Hungarian courts, MTI noted.
