PM to pay law enforcement agencies from internet tax income
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán himself came up with the idea of the internet tax, as a way to get sufficient resources to pay for wage increases for law enforcement agencies, police and the military, Hungarian economic online daily hvg.hu reported yesterday, citing unnamed sources from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The prime minister has plans to raise the police and military wages by 25-30%, and the government would cover these with the internet tax, according to hvg.hu. The economic daily points out that, although the constitution does not state what institutions fall under the umbrella term of law enforcement agencies, Hungarian Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) might also receive a wage increase of 30%, despite rumors of corruption in NAV sparked by news that six Hungarian officials are barred from entry in the U.S. on the basis of corruption charges.
