Varga: Russia sanctions not in Hungary’s interests
Reiterating his boss’ late March statement that economic sanctions against Russia would “best be avoided” as neither in the interest of Europe nor Hungary, National Economy Minister Mihály Varga said essentially the same on national TV the day before parliamentary elections.
The day before the national elections, Economy Minister Mihály Varga appeared on an Echo TV program to speak on the topics of foreign direct investment and, in the immediate short-term future, the Russia/Ukraine situation. On the program, Varga stated emphatically that “Hungary’s interest does not lie with imposing sanctions against Russia,” explaining that “special solutions” should be found to solving the situation.
In Varga’s opinion, the Ukraine crisis has already weakened confidence in Hungary and has dropped the value of the forint in 2014.
