Hungary's Customs and Excise Office (VPOP) has strengthened controls on excise goods entering Hungary from non European Union countries, the office said on Wednesday in a statement.
The measure aims to protect the economy of Hungary and the EU, and, by clamping down on smuggling, ensure smooth traffic flow at the EU's Schengen borders, the statement said. Under the regulations, passengers older than 17 years are allowed to bring to Hungary a maximum of 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos or cheroots, 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco tax free for personal consumption, VPOP said.
The maximum allowance on beverages is 1 liter of pure alcohol or 2 liters of wine.
Fuel in a car's standard tank can also be brought to the country tax free, VPOP said. The minimum penalty for abusing regulations is Ft 20,000 and legal proceedings could include the confiscation of unauthorized goods and vehicles carrying them, the statement said.
