Ukraine president calls for talks on grand coalition government

Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko has called on the country’s three main parties to start talks about forming a grand coalition government.

With more than 99% of the votes from the weekend’s general election counted, his Our Ukraine party and former prime minister Yulia Timoshenko’s grouping - the Western-leaning Orange allies - have just over 45% of the vote. So the pair could well be working together again, despite Yushchenko sacking Timoshenko as prime minister after just a few months last time. Current prime minister Viktor Yanukovich has also claimed victory and with some justification as his pro-Russian Party of the Regions took the highest proportion of the poll. But even with the addition of some smaller parties, his coalition bloc would fall short of the overall Orange figure. (
