Trade unions hold car rally against planned gov’t measures

Four trade union federations started a demonstration with nearly 200 cars along central Budapest's Andrassy Boulevard on Thursday, demanding immediate negotiations with the government on planned measures concerning labor, pensions, and education.

The Federation of Autonomous Trade Unions (ASzSz), the Trade Union Federation of Professionals (ESzT), the National Federation of Hungarian Trade Unions (MSzOSz) and the Cooperation Forum of Trade Unions (SzZEF) have planned similar demonstrations at 19 other cities nationwide.

The unions are protesting planned changes to the Labor Code, saying that the modifications would increase the vulnerability of employees and would result in salary cuts.

They are also against the government's closure and replacement of the interest-coordination employee-employer forum OET, eliminating early retirement, and "drastic" cuts in welfare benefits.
