The G8 preparation are not going well

The print edition of Le Monde makes the point in its main editorial hat next week's G8 summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, will be a test both for Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and hostess of the summit, and for Nicholas Sarkozy, who will attend his first summit ever.

There are two big and unresolved issues that hang over the summit. One is Kosovo, which the EU and the US want to grant the status of independence under surveillance, while the Russians are adamantly opposed to any change in the borders of the Balkans. Le Monde quotes a diplomat saying that the two sides are diametrically opposed in this debate. The other issue is climate change, amid a hectic diplomatic flurry by Germany to co-opt the US into a joint position. (focus-fen.net)
