Sale of frequencies to start in H2, says Fellegi

The government has decided on framework regulations for distribution of frequencies, thus the procedure for selling unused frequencies will start in the second half of 2011, National Development Minister Tamás Fellegi said at a meeting of the Joint Venture Association on Friday.

The sale of the frequencies could boost competition on the mobile market, reduce prices, improve the quality of content, broaden coverage and result in the introduction of new technologies and services, Fellegi said.

The National Development Ministry said in March that the government could call a sale for the 900 MHz band which would give winners access to the frequencies by the end of Q3 2011.

The Hungarian units of Deutsche Telekom, the UK's Vodafone and Norway's Telenor hold rights for frequencies in the 900 MHz band at present.
