Public works such as road maintenance provides casual jobs for people who otherwise find it difficult to find employment, and the government has set aside Ft 10 billion (€40 million) this year to give temporary work to 35,000 people, Labor Minister Gábor Csizmár told reporters in Budapest on Friday. Central funding will be supplemented by partners such as forestry and water management. The amount available is a significant increase on the Ft 2 billion available in 2002, Csizmár said. Public works this year include a Ft 1 billion forest clearing and maintenance carried out jointly with the farm ministry. Other funding will go towards ragweed elimination, nature maintenance at motorway sites and national parks, as well as flood prevention projects. The minister also signed a Ft 1 billion agreement with national railway MÁV covering joint funding for the employment of 1,200 people for public works.
