Public employees hike OEP sick payments

In 2006 the National Health Fund Administration’s (OEP) paid almost Ft 100 billion, Ft 4 billion more than it had planned to on sick allowance payments.

The overrun is, partly, due to the public service employees who, threatened by a wave of layoffs, took shelter on the sick-lists, say experts. During this time no one can be dismissed, and being on the sick list is more lucrative for them than being on the dole. OEP hopes to have to pay out less this year than in 2006, and to recover some money through a tough revision. (Napi Gazdaság)
