Prosecutor's office receives over 40 complaints on police activity

Budapest's Municipal Prosecutor's Office has received over 40 complaints concerning measures the police took on October 23 against participants of anti-government demonstrations, spokesman Attila Morvai announced on Thursday.

Morvai said his authority had started 27 legal proceedings after complaints about alleged police violence in dispersing crowds in downtown Budapest on the 50th anniversary of Hungary's anti-Soviet uprising. Morvai added that a further 35 procedures were underway based on complaints about measures taken by the police in the course of protests between mid-September and October 23.
Budapest's Kossuth tér and other central locations were the sites of demonstrations demanding the resignation of the government Since September 17, several times resulting in violent clashes with police.
