Poultry Council confirms fowl is safe to eat

The Poultry Council confirms that it is safe to eat Hungarian poultry, as the birds are raised in a closely monitored environment, a member of the council's board told the press on Monday.

To raise safety levels even higher, abattoirs will now begin to use a quick test for bird flu, which has been used in the US. He added that according to the council's figures, poultry consumption has not waned since the prime minister's announcement that the first case of the deadly virus H5NI was detected in Hungary last week. The virus has so far only infected birds passing through Hungary and not the local stock and testing of the dead swans found in South Hungary earlier this month and thought to have been killed by the epidemic is still underway.
