PM agrees to bring forward pension increase

The Ft 3,500 pension increase for agricultural workers planned to be introduced in 2007 can be brought forward to this July, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány said on Monday. These are old people who currently receive only around Ft 30,000 a month, Gyurcsány said. The measure will affect nearly 15,000 people and will cost over Ft 300 million, to be paid from the budget reserve, he added.

At a meeting with pensioners' trade unions, Gyurcsány also agreed that the age limit for free public transport will be reduced from the current 65 years to 62 in order to adjust it to the retirement age. This measure will cost Ft 4 billion annually and will be introduced gradually in 2007-2008, he said. In addition, 13th-month salaries will be extended to those who are entitled to regular social benefits, which will affect nearly 200,000 people, Gyurcsány said.
