Parliament passes 2005 final account act

The 2005 Final Accounts Act was passed by Parliament yesterday, following a heated debate concerning a refund obligation totaling Ft 3.1 billion for 160 local governments.

The latter will be required to reimburse utility development subsidies they received without eligibility between 2002 and 2005, as the State Audit Office (ÁSz) found. The obligation to repay tens or hundreds of million forints to the state may cause many local governments to go bankrupt, András Tállai, an MP of opposition leader Fidesz argued. The issue has been discussed by three parliamentary committees, all of which approved the refund, Socialist MP István Jauernik responded. The towns and cities in question will be allowed to repay the debt in installments to ease the financial burden, he added. (Napi Gazdaság)
