November 4 demonstrations end peacefully

No police action was required at some 30 demonstrations and rallies held in Budapest yesterday to commemorate the crushing of the 1956 revolution by Soviet forces.

The largest event was a torchlight march organized by opposition parties Fidesz and KDNP, which started from the House of Terror on Andrássy út and ended at the Astoria, where participants placed their candles and torches on the ground and dispersed peacefully, news reports said.
There was one illegal demonstration organized by far right groups which had not been previously approved by the authorities, but there was no clash with police.
