Hungary's vineyards shrink

Hungary's vintners grew grapes on 83,555 hectares of vineyards in Hungary in 2009, 9% less area than in 2001, fresh data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) shows.

There were 76,436 hectares of vineyards in designated wine-growing regions in 2009, down 2.8% from 2001. During the same period, the area of vineyards in areas not designated as wine-growing regions plunged 44.3% to 7,118 hectares.

Almost all Hungarian vineyards are less than one hectare. (MTI – Econews)
