The already strained Slovakian-Hungarian relations are set to deteriorate even further after the incoming Orbán government made clear that it would go through with its plans of giving ethnic Hungarians in neighboring countries dual citizenship.
Slovakia recalled its ambassador from Budapest, while Prime Minister Robert Fico promised very stern response measures to the plans, including taking them up with international organizations.
Fico said the unilateral Hungarian amendment of citizenship would breach the terms of the standing bilateral contract between the two countries and would also constitute a violation of international law.
Fico was also highly critical of the manner in which the new cabinet is aiming to force through its will, saying Fidesz is “egotistic and arrogant”. (Index.hu)
