Health care to remain under gov't for now

Apart from insurance plans complementing national health coverage, the government will definitely not open up the healthcare market to private insurance companies next year, and probably not in 2008, either, business daily Napi Gazdaság reported, citing sources close to the coalition parties.

In fact, there is no guarantee that this will happen anytime before the next elections, the newspaper stated, quoting Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány who said the question of whether Hungary was prepared to liberalize the healthcare insurance market would have to be answered in 2008. Until then, the main task ahead is to convert the National Health Fund Administration (OEP) into a real insurance company, improving healthcare financing and service quality, the paper noted.
