Gov’t dismisses as baseless rumours it will nationalise bank deposits

Government spokeswoman Anna Nagy dismissed "baseless rumors" the government would nationalise bank deposits at a press conference at financial market watchdog PSzÁF on Friday.

PSzÁF spokesman István Binder said the watchdog had been informed of emails sent to public lists of addresses alleging the government would try to freeze bank accounts over HUF 2 million to counter sanctions the European Commission would bring against the country.

PSzÁF has launched a procedure on suspicion of illegal market influence because of the letter, he added. Rumours of the nationalisation of deposits turned up on the internet on Thursday, Nagy said.
