Government's national security council convenes

The government's national security council has been convened for Tuesday morning, in the wake of a demonstration which turned into a riot in front of Hungarian Television's headquarters. Speaking in a program on commercial television channel RTL Klub, Justice Minister József Petretei said that it was up to the council to draw consequences and take appropriate measures. Answering a question when the situation could be settled, the minister said that it depended on the arrival of more police at the site. Escalation of the demonstration was not expected; "the police were not prepared... for such violent acts," the minister said. Petretei added that the officers at the site were authorised to use all means required by the situation, excluding the use of weapons. Hundreds of demonstrators broke into the television building early on Tuesday as part of protests that had been going on outside parliament for the second day, demanding the prime minister's resignation.
