Fidesz mayors forgo bonuses on PM's instruction

Mayors of governing Fidesz are doing without last year's bonuses, following the instruction of the prime minister, daily Magyar Hirlap said on Monday.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán earlier asked the mayors of the governing party to decline any bonuses they were awarded or return them. He explained that public sector workers should not be paid bonuses when the economy contracts.
Fidesz communications director Máté Kocsis told daily Magyar Hirlap that 114 of the almost 900 Fidesz mayors and deputy-mayors had been awarded bonuses. Of these, 93 immediately gave their bonuses to charity, 12 returned the amount and eight did not even take receipt of the money. Just the mayor of Tarany declined to return his bonus, preferring instead to resign from the party.
