European Commission exemption from air quality standards

The European Commission on Thursday said it adopted a decision giving parts of Hungary temporary exemptions from EU air quality standards for air pollutants (PM) until June 2011.

Airborne particulate (PM 10) are emitted mainly in pollutant emissions from industry, traffic and domestic heating. They can cause asthma, cardiovascular problems, lung cancer and premature death, the Commission said.

The Commission also decided on exemptions for areas in Austria and Germany. (MTI-ECONEWS)
