EESC to hold conference in Budapest

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will meet in Budapest on March 9-10 to discuss national responsibilities in implementing the European Union's Lisbon strategy, the Hungarian Economic and Social Council (GSZT) announced on Thursday. GSZT Secretary General János Tóth, Hungary's representative in the EESC, said the European body had been requested last year to evaluate achievements made in the past four years of the strategy and to develop a proposal to improve further implementation. GSZT President Sándor Demján said the Lisbon strategy, designed to increase the community's competitiveness, had outlined good objectives, but only a few of them had been realized. He added that the EU's new members could become instrumental in improving competitiveness through the motivation of their labor force.
