Draft 2007 budget shows country has "come of age"

Minister of Economics and Transportation János Kóka said the government\'s draft 2007 budget is one of a country which has "come of age".

"After a six-year delay...politics must come of age and the country's residents must come of age," Kóka said. Nobody is happy about the government's austerity measures or the scrapping of some subsidies, he added. The Ministry of Economics and Transportation has been allocated Ft 983 billion in the draft budget, Kóka said some of this money will be used to continue building motorways and improving main roads. About 120 kilometers of motorway will be completed in 2007, and work will begin on building another 187 kilometers. He said railway reforms would be a priority for the ministry in 2007. Passengers will have to pay more to cover the cost of upkeep of well-traveled rail lines, and MÁV Cargo, MÁV\'s recently spun-off freight unit, will be privatized. (Mti-Eco)
