Discriminating employer fined Ft 700,000

The Equal Opportunities Authority on Thursday said it fined an employer Ft 700,000 for discriminating against a Roma man during a job application process.

After the authority investigated the case based on clients' testimonies and by testing the employer, it was proven that the Roma job seeker was turned down because of his ethnic background whilst he was in every other way qualified for the job. The job seeker, whose surname, Kolompár, is commonly known for its Roma background, told the employer that he was Roma and was denied information about the job that other test applicants were given. “The employer could not give reasonable proof that there was no connection between the rejection and the fact that the applicant was a Roma,” the authority's report said.
