Budapest police chief Péter Gergényi has submitted a request for retirement to national police chief László Bene, a police spokesperson announced on Wednesday.
Gergényi, 60, who has served in the police force for 42 years, will retire at the end of the year, spokesman Tibor Jármy said.
Gergényi has been the subject of political and professional attacks in recent weeks by people claiming that police force during the recent riots was excessive. Asked whether his decision to retire had been connected to recent events, he declined to comment.
